Perhaps the more "controversial" feature of Baroque trumpets, if you can call it that, are the addition of vents or small holes in the instrument that help accommodate changes in intonation to make certain pitches more in tune and sit better on the instrument. Thus the Baroque trumpet is approximately twice the length of a modern D trumpet and almost four times the length of a piccolo trumpet. Because of its lower fundamental frequency, the resonances of the Baroque trumpet are spaced a factor of 2 closer together than a modern D trumpet, and roughly a factor of four closer than a piccolo trumpet. Nowadays, most baroque trumpeters play instruments modernized with vent holes, which helps tremendously with intonation and accuracy. There are 2 basic types of vent-hole systems used on modern baroque trumpets: the 4-hole system and the 3-howl system.
